Chile qualifies to the Pan American semifinals after defeating Paraguay on penalties
La Roja Sub 23 will face Colombia or Argentina in the Pan American semifinals.
Chile's U-23 team qualified for the semifinals of the Pan American Games after defeating Paraguay 4-2 on penalties.
The match was played at the Estadio Centenario in Armenia, Colombia, and ended 1-1 after regulation time. Chile took the lead in the first half through a goal from Joan Cruz, but Paraguay equalized in the second half through a goal from Fernando Romero.
In the penalty shootout, Chile converted all four of their penalties, while Paraguay missed two. Chile's goalkeeper, Julio Fierro, was the hero of the shootout, saving two penalties.
Chile's victory means that they will face either Colombia or Argentina in the semifinals. The other semifinal will be played between Brazil and Mexico.
La Roja Sub 23 has had a strong tournament so far, winning two of their three group matches and drawing the other.
They defeated Ecuador 3-1 in their opening match, and then drew 1-1 with Argentina. In their final group match, they defeated Peru 2-0.
Chile's victory over Paraguay is a major boost for their hopes of winning the Pan American Games gold medal. They will be one of the favorites to win the tournament, along with Brazil and Argentina.
